Historical Context (Because trivia makes you look smarter!): Did you know that Benjamin Franklin envisioned the danger of airborne attack in 1784, only a few months after the first manned flight in a hot air balloon? Balloon observers created the parachute so they could jump out in case of an attack. It took until June 1940 for a test platoon was formed and finally in August 1942 the 82 Infantry Division was redesignated and the 101st was activated. Today, Airborne units remain a force in the Army's land power capabilities.
